The Association was formed in April, 1964 as the School Library Association of New South Wales. The founding president was John Hirst.
It was formed to provide a professional organisation for all engaged or interested in school libraries. In 1995, the Association changed its name to the Australian School Library Association (New South Wales) Inc. and is now a professional organisation encompassing school libraries, learning centres, resource centres and centres of information technology. ASLA (NSW) is also a member of the Joint Council for Professional Teachers' Associations.
Together with other State and Territory Associations, the Association forms a federated body known as ASLA (Australian School Library Association) which gives all a unified voice at the national level.
The Association is also a member of the International Association of School Librarianship (IASL) .
Presidents of the Association have included many prominent members of the profession in NSW.
Life Membership has been granted to six Association members.
